‘No Dogs Allowed’ – except in France

Dogs are welcome in most restaurants and bars in France and Monaco, except perhaps the grandest.  The American Bar in the Hotel de Paris in Monte Carlo, for example, will serve your champagne (what else would you order in the Hotel de Paris?)  And he’ll quickly return with a bowl of water served on a tray, laid with a white cloth, and a plate of dog biscuits should Monsieur le Chien be a little peckish.

In fact, dogs are allowed in most places in France including  shops and markets.  However, in supermarkets there is always a sign saying ‘no dogs allowed’ but of course the management turn a blind eye to a ball of fluff sitting in Madame’s trolley amongst the Camembert and the Côtes-de-Provence. And when the trolley gets too full, there’s always room in a bag that swings from the handle.

Candy, you are welcome anytime! Mind you, you might get some ‘looks’ if you turn up at a restaurant with your two Irish wolfhounds!

I love it that they love dogs so much in France.

Well they do in terms of accepting dogs in so many places, BUT there are still so many dogs in refuges and shelters and often we hear of cruelty – so unfortunately there are two sides to this. But yes, the acceptance of dogs in public places is absolutely great. Thanks for writing, Margaret x

We have just subscribed to your new blog after enjoying Menton Daily Photo (and others) for over eight years, and although a little apprehensive at losing our daily “Menton” fix, your new blog is fabulous. If our first foray is any indication, we can settle in for a long run of enjoying your blog.
